“I do, indeed, have a number of very strong biases. I have a deep-seated bias against hate and intolerance. I have a bias against racial and religious bigotry. I have a bias against war; a bias for peace. I have a bias which leads me to believe in the essential goodness of my fellow man; which leads me to believe that no problem of human relations is ever insoluble.”
— Dr. Ralph J. Bunche
UCLA seeks to further Ralph Bunche’s legacy of statesmanship and his commitment to international peace and understanding by creating a $500,000 endowed professorship in his honor. By making possible exceptional teaching and research, the Ralph J. Bunche Endowed Chair in International Relations will help to prepare future generations for leadership in tomorrow’s world arena.
Building on the Legacy
On the UCLA campus, a building and an undergraduate scholarship fund currently bear Ralph J. Bunche’s name. It is fitting that his alma mater pay lasting tribute to Ralph Bunche through an endowed chair. The Ralph J. Bunche Endowed Chair in International Relations offers an exceptional opportunity to link in perpetuity both a premier academic institution and a great statesman.
The Ralph J. Bunche Endowed Chair
An endowed chair is the highest honor UCLA bestows to acknowledge a leader in an academic field. An endowed professorship that carries the Ralph Bunche name will enable UCLA to recruit an acclaimed scholar in the field of international relations to its premier faculty.
The scholar selected as the Ralph J. Bunche Professor may use the interest earned annually on the endowment to:
- support graduate students and research assistants
- acquire library materials for research and study
- develop and implement programs related to the goals of the chairholder
- conduct essential travel and other important activities
