IAC Fellowships & Research Grants at the Bunche Center

Updated 1/3/2017

The Institute of American Cultures (IAC) Fellowships & Research Grants

The IAC has made funds available annually through its visiting scholar and fellowship programs and its research grants. These awards have resulted in the publication of hundreds of books, monographs, and articles as well as the completion of many dissertations, master’s theses, and MFA film projects.  They have contributed significantly to the fund of new knowledge about America’s underrepresented populations.

IAC visiting scholar and graduate/predoctoral fellowships are competitive awards that support scholarship on African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Chicanas/os. The acceptance of a fellowship carries with it a commitment to contribute to the research activities of the sponsoring ethnic studies research center.

Visiting Scholar Fellowship Program in Ethnic Studies

The Institute of American Cultures offers in-residence appointments to support research on African Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Chicanas/os. We especially encourage applications that advance our understanding of new social and cultural realities occasioned by the dramatic population shifts of recent decades, including greater heterogeneity within ethnic groups and increased interethnic contact.

The 2017-2018 IAC Visiting Scholars will receive funding for one or more quarters, with an approximate stipend of $35,000 for three quarters (contingent upon rank, experience, and date of completion of their terminal degree). In the event that an award is for less than three quarters the stipend will be prorated in accordance with the actual length of the award. Visiting Scholars who have a home institution, these funds can be used to supplement sabbatical support for the total that does not exceed the candidate’s current institutional salary. These Visiting Scholars will be paid through their home institution and will be expected to continue their health benefits through that source. Visiting Scholars who do not have a home institution will receive a stipend for living expenses and may be eligible for health benefits. Awardees may receive up to $4,000 in research support. The Bunche Center for African American Studies will not have a Visiting Scholar this academic year. If your research is interethnic, you may want to inquire with the other ethnic studies centers about their fellowships.

Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and hold a Ph.D. from an accredited college or university (or, in the case of the arts, an appropriate terminal degree) in a relevant field at the time of appointment. Graduate/Predoctoral Fellowship in Ethnic Studies

The UCLA Institute of American Cultures (IAC), which houses UCLA’s four Ethnic Studies Research Centers (American Indian Studies Center, Asian American Studies Center, Bunche Center for African American Studies, Chicano Studies Research Center) offers a limited number of Graduate/Predoctoral Fellowships. We especially encourage applications that advance our understanding of new social and cultural realities occasioned by the dramatic population shifts of recent decades, including greater heterogeneity within ethnic groups and increased interethnic contact. Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis to current UCLA graduate students and predoctoral candidates with demonstrated interest in the field of ethnic studies to aid in the completion of a thesis or dissertation. The terms of awarded fellowships may range from 1 to 3 quarters, and will cover in-state tuition and fees plus a maximum stipend of $6,000 per quarter.  The acceptance of a fellowship carries with it the commitment to make a contribution to the activities of the sponsoring Ethnic Studies Research Center. The Chicano Studies Research Center and the American Indian Studies Center will not be awarding a 2017-2018 Graduate/Predoctoral Fellowship.

Eligibility Requirements:

Open to UCLA students with a demonstrated interest in African American, American Indian, Asian American, or Chicana/o studies. Application for the fellowship in African American Studies is open only to doctoral students who will have advanced to candidacy by the beginning of the fellowship year. Restrictions apply regarding acceptance of supplemental employment and/or other awards during the fellowship year.
