Cultural Studies in the African Diaspora (CSADP)  Policy Statement

Regarding Graduate Student Conference Travel Funds

CSADP has limited funds available for graduate students traveling to conferences at which they will present papers on their own research.  These funds are to be used solely to help students defray travel costs to and from conferences of significance to the study of the African Diaspora. The CSADP Selection committee recognize the following policies in dispensing these funds.

Applicants must be graduate students who are  registered during the quarter the conference will take place.

  1. To be eligible, applicants must be presenting a paper and listed in the conference program. (No awards will be given in order to read a paper in an author’s absence).

  2. Funds may only be used to defray the cost of travel and accommodations.  Conference fees and meal expenses will not be paid.  Award recipients will be required to submit receipts within 2 weeks of the end of the conference.

  3. Completed applications must be submitted by the announced deadline, accompanied by a copy of the students’ most recent transcript, an abstract of the paper and signature and approval of major advisor.  Also attached, or submitted as soon as it becomes available, must be a copy of the notification that the paper has been formally accepted for presentation.  (Checks will not be issued without a letter confirming that the paper  has been accepted for presentation .)

  4. Applications will be evaluated in light of their inherent merit, the paper’s focus on African Diaspora studies, the student’s scholarly promise, academic achievement, and progress toward degree and the extent of research and travel support received previously from CAAS or CSADP.
