Mission Statement
The
primary aim of the CSADP is to encourage scholarly activity on
people of African descent and to provide a framework to increase
collaborative and inter-disciplinary study of the African Diaspora.
This particular focus is in the original tradition of African
American Studies programs which began in response to the dispersed
and often inaccessible information which existed on African
Americans.
Because of increased access to new research through
meetings, electronic communication, scholarly journals and various
media outlets, scholars are better able to share ideas. As a result,
the quality of scholarship on African Americans in the U.S. has
greatly improved.
This
new research has led to a heightened awareness of the extent to
which U.S. findings and experiences are related to those in other
parts of the African Diaspora. We seek to expand research that
explores the processes and forms that link or differentiate Diaspora
experiences.
In particular, CSADP intends to improve links with
scholars in disciplines which both focus on those of African descent
as well as those which target groups and issues which include people
of African descent. Along with the U.S., these include the
Caribbean, Europe, North and South America, and Asia.
CSADP is
funded by the Ford foundation and the Dean of Social Sciences, Dean
of Humanities and Vice Chancellor at the University of California,
Los Angeles.
