"Put
Your Hands Together:" Representation, Interpretation and Black
Spirituality, May 14, 1998
This
symposium arose out of a series of conversations about the need for
stronger connections between African American Studies faculty and
students at UCLA, and religious institutions in the Greater Los
Angeles area. Our invited scholars presented some aspect of
their research that addressed issues around black religious
practices in the African Diaspora. Speakers included:
D.
Keith Naylor, Religious Studies Department, Occidental
College, "Black Representations of the Natural World:
Spirituals and Other Texts."
Katherine
Clay Bassard, Department of English, UC Berkeley,
"Turning Cursing Into Blessing:" Theorizing African
American Women Writers' Biblical Re-Vision."
Guthrie
Ramsey, Department of Music, Tufts University, "Santa
Claus Ain't Got Nothin' On This:" Kirk Franklin's New Jack
Gospel."
